Rogue Lockpicking Guide

Welcome to the Lockpicking Guide (updated for 4.0.3a).

In Cataclysm, lockpicking has become a permanent skill that levels up by itself as you gain levels with your character. So this means that at level 85 you will automatically have a lockpicking skill of 425.

You no longer have to manually level up your lockpicking skills like you once had to. I have kept this guide on the site though so that you can see what was once required.

At the “Locked Items Table” section of the guide you will see a sortable table of most of the locked items that exist in this game that you can use to help determine your own custom path if you desire.

Lockpicking really doesn’t require much gold to level up, I mean you might spend money flying around but it’s not a gold sink. If you find you are low on gold from spending your time lockpicking instead of gold farming then take a peek at this Gold Guide.

Before you get into this guide there are a few things that need to be noted.

1) The maximum you can get your lockpicking skill up to at any given time is 5 times your level. If you are level 16 then you will max lockpicking at 80 (16×5). If you are level 70 you will max your lockpicking skill at 350 (70×5) and so on.

2) You MUST be a Rogue to learn lockpicking and when you are ready to learn lockpicking you will need to see your Rogue Trainer who will get you setup. At level 16 you will learn lockpicking and be sent on a quest.

3) Some items don’t allow you to just right click them and start the lockpicking process for you. For some things that require lockpicking and can’t be right click you will need to left click the lockpicking skill in the general tab of your character sheet and left click onto the box, item, door, or object after to pick it.

4) Thieves’ Tools are no longer necessary to pick locks, this was a new change in Patch 3.0.2.

5) For skill gains from doors that are on a cooldown timer, you will have to wait approximately 5 minutes before getting another skill off of the door. Doors that you already have the key for will be green, therefore, you must use the Pick Lock skill from your character sheet on a door to get a skill.

Locked Items Table

I have created a Locked Items Table for your viewing that contains all of the locked items that Rogues can benefit from, to include: Crafted Items, Doors, Footlockers, Junkboxes, Lockboxes, Locked Chests, and Treasure Chests.

1-70

For this guide 1-70 will be done solely on the first chest you are sent to when you first learn lockpicking. There are some alternatives to this route but it is not recommended you use them. To complete this section of the guide you must be level 14 otherwise you will not be able to get your skill to 70. Please note you can get your skill to 100 off of these chests if you wish.

Horde
Buccaneer’s Strongbox

Blood Elves
Burial Chest

Alliance
Practice Lockbox

Alternatives
Engineering - Practice Lock (1-80)
Pick Pocket - Battered Junkbox (1-100)
Fishing - Small Locked Chest
Ground Spawn (Blood Elves) - Primitive Chest

71-170

The next section of this guide 70-170 will be primarily for a chest that is part of the Poison Quest that every Rogue receives at level 20. You will most likely need help to do the quest at level 20 or you can wait till level 24-28 when it will become substantially easier to do the quest. If you want to level lockpicking without using the poison quest chest, see the alternatives listed below. Remember that you
will most likely have to click on your Pick Lock skill from the general tab and then click the chest afterward (works best if you just pull the Pick Lock skill onto your hotbar)

Horde
Gallywix’s Lockbox

Alliance
Duskwood Chest

Alternatives
Ground Spawn - Waterlogged Footlocker (70-150)
Ground Spawn - Battered Footlocker (70-120+)
Ground Spawn - Battered Footlocker (110-175)
Pick Pocket - Work Junkbox (75-170)
Fishing - Sturdy Locked Chest

171-225

For this section of the guide you will get to choose your lockpicking preference via zone. The Badlands is the most popular choice because it is not under water like the Desolace section. The battered footlocker in Badlands is found upstairs in Angor Fortress while the Dented Footlocker you will find downstairs.

Badlands
Ground Spawn - Battered Footlocker (150-200)
Ground Spawn - Dented Footlocker (175-225)

Desolace
Ground Spawn - Waterlogged Footlocker (150-200)
Ground Spawn - Mossy Footlocker (175-225)

Alternatives
Pick Pocket - Sturdy Junkbox
Fishing - Ironbound Locked Chest
Door – Scarlet Monastery Doors (175-225)

226-250

There are two zones again where ground spawns are the best choice to level from 226-250. Don’t forget to pick pocket any humanoids in these areas because they have a chance to give you a Heavy Junkbox.

Azshara
Ground Spawn - Mossy Footlocker

Tanaris
Ground Spawn - Dented Footlocker

Alternatives
Pick Pocket - Sturdy Junkbox

251-300

For 251-300 you can pick which lockpicking preference you like. I suggest you do ground spawns because you can pick pocket mobs at the same time but you can do Doors in this section if you want.

Eastern Plaguelands
Ground Spawn - Scarlet Footlocker

Alternatives
Pick Pocket - Heavy Junkbox
Door - Blackrock Depths Doors

301-350

Sticking to ground spawns once again you can finish out your journey to 350 on Wicker Chests in Zangarmarsh or you can select one of the alternative routes for fun.

Zangarmarsh
Ground Spawn - Wicker Chest

Alternatives
Nagrand Ground Spawn - Dented Footlocker
Pick Pocket - Strong Junkbox
Doors – Stratholme, Dire Maul (300-330)

351-400

Alternatives
Pick Pocket - Reinforced Junkbox
Doors – Violet Hold, Shattered Halls, Shadow Labyrinth, The Arcatraz, Karazhan
